About the event
The horse world is full of strongly-held and often conflicting opinions about horses, and the right way to train and keep them. Often, these opinions are simply received wisdom, or the latest fashion, and aren't backed up by research or a solid understanding of how horses actually think, feel, learn, and interact with each other or other species, or what their needs are.
If you're new to horses, or if you've become a horse owner for the first time, how are you supposed to find your way through all this information? You can easily end up following what someone else at the place you keep your horse is doing, even though it doesn't feel quite right, or spending a vast amount of money on gear, supplements, or clinics, without ever getting the kind of relationship with your horse that you hoped for.
The Talking Horse introductory workshop is for anyone who'd like to learn how to live and work with horses in a harmonious, mutually respectful way. It covers wild horse ethology (or culture), its implications for how we can maximise the welfare of domestic horses, and the basics of communicating with horses in their own language. These elements are the basis of a happy horse-human relationship.
If there is enough interest, the two day workshop will lead into a series of practice days. The focus of these days would be on "speaking horse" - developing your skills in having empathetic, clear, two-way conversations with horses - but we could also cover horse welfare topics such as setting up your property to meet your horse's needs (and make things easier for yourself), recognising pain, diet, hoof care - and anything else the group is interested in exploring: we'd build this list of topics together.
No previous horse experience is needed, and you don't have to have your own horse, as we'll be working with the Potent herd.
